WATCH: Durban resident celebrates International Cat Rescue Day

Local rescuer and animal lover shares insight into her rescues and her journey.

AS the world celebrates International Cat Rescue Day today, Thursday, March 2, Farrah Khan Maharajh, a Red Hill resident, is reflecting on her journey as a cat mom and rescuer.

The day is about bringing awareness to the plight of stray cats across the world who are in need of a loving home. The day encourages global citizens to consider adopting these lovable felines.

Maharajh, who is mom to several cats and kittens, started her non-profit organisation (NPO) Feeding the Furballs in 2014.

The NPO helps distribute food and feed more than 740 animals from Eshowe to Underberg and also helps with sterilisation drives.

“I’ve always loved animals, and cats especially. Animals are loyal and always there for you. They give you unconditional love. There aren’t many people who do what we do. We fulfil several roles with Feeding the Furballs, including assisting rescuers with food and supplies so they may concentrate on their rescue work, networking for animals in need of forever homes and inspiring others to help animals in need.

“When I was thinking of the name for the organisation, I didn’t want my name, because this was about the animals. I wanted something catchy, and I was pressed for time, but Feeding the Furballs just stuck. To put it simply, we are the Gift of the Givers for animals,” she said.

If you would like to assist the NPO, e-mail admin@feedingthefurballs.org or visit www.feedingthefurballs.org for more information.
