WATCH: Great-great-grandmother celebrates 102nd birthday

The community surprised Jagthamba Naidoo with a birthday cake and song as she celebrated her 102nd birthday.

MUSGRAVE resident Jagthamba Naidoo celebrated her 102nd birthday this week. Born in Stanger on February 27, 1921, Naidoo has lived in various areas over the years, including Mayville and Chatsworth.

She settled in Musgrave more than two decades ago. The 102-year-old has seven children (three surviving), 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Naidoo said she celebrated her big day with family.

“My birthday was really nice – all the children were with me, and I really enjoyed it,” she said.

Naidoo’s son, Dee Naidoo, added that the family went out for a birthday lunch.

When we got home, we had another celebration at home – my niece brought a cake. And then the residents in the flat threw an impromptu celebration, as well, so [my mother] had three celebrations. She is the oldest resident here and has been here the longest,” he said.

Dee added that his mother grew up in Stanger where she met her husband.

“She grew up in Stanger and met my father there. She got married in her early 20s and had seven children – two girls and five boys. She worked when she was in her 40s as a seamstress for about 15 years,” said Dee.

He added that his mother has a kind heart and a taste for adventure.

“She has travelled to the US many times, and to India, and she is very adventurous. At 86, she went to Disney World and rode on the roller-coaster,” said Dee.
