Two children escape blaze as fire breaks out at Morningside home

The flames were visible inside the house from the roadside.

A FIRE broke out at a Venice Road home in Morningside on Sunday, February 19 at around 11:00.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Acting Divisional Commander for the eThekwini Fire Department, Sifiso Mbatha said there were no injuries reported, although two children escaped the house before the blaze spread.

“Two boys who were inside the house were informed by neighbors that another room was on fire and managed to get out of the house before the fire reached them,” he said.

A team of approximately 15 firefighters with one water carrier arrived on the scene to extinguish the blaze.

“When we arrived, the fire was coming through the roof and we could see the fire building up inside the double story house. We managed to confine the fire to the three rooms on the top floor of the house.  We used two lines of 38mm hoses to extinguish the fire,” said Mbatha.

“It didn’t take us long to put the fire out as we had enough man power with plus /minus 15 firefighters on the scene,” added Mbatha.

The fire has since been extinguished, leaving substantial damage to the home. The cause of the fire has not been determined at this stage.

“The top floor of the house is completely damaged which makes it hard for us to find out what caused the fire,” concluded Mbatha.

In March last year, a Musgrave home on Windmill Road went up in flames. Firefighters reported that 90% of the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived. The cause of the fire was reportedly an electrical fault.
