WATCH: Prestik prodigy models ‘dino-mite’ creations

MANY boys and girls develop a keen interest in dinosaurs in their childhood, enamoured by the idea that these gigantic creatures once roamed the Earth. A common outlet for this fascination is to play with dinosaur toys/models or get a box of crayons and make the prehistoric creatures come to life with a dinosaur-themed colouring book.

One child took his fascination with dinosaurs a step further and started making hyper-realistic Prestik models of the ancient animals when he was only in Grade Three.

Jamie Goveia is a Sydenham resident who is not only a talented artist and dinosaur enthusiast; he uses his creativity to make out-of-the-box detailed re-creations of dinosaurs using Prestik, all done by hand!

“When I was in Grade One, I loved dinosaurs, and because I was so fascinated with them, I started to make them out of foil. Then in Grade Three, I decided to start making them out of Prestik. I made flat 2D versions before I started making the 3D models,” said Jamie.

Jamie says that his pieces can take a few hours to make. “Usually, it takes me around six hours or more to make a piece, and it depends on how much detail I put into it.”

Jamie’s mother, Marissa Goveia, says the now-18-year-old amazes her every day. “Jamie has amazed me from day one. Jamie has Asperger’s Syndrome, so he’s on the autistic spectrum, and he’s always been fascinated with dinosaurs. He told people from the time he was a child that he’s going to be a palaeontologist when he gets older. To this day, he’s still passionate about dinosaurs and prehistoric animals, and once he started working with Prestik to make these models, he just got better and better. He also draws dinosaurs, and the way he makes these creatures come to life is spectacular.”

According to Wikipedia, Asperger’s syndrome is a condition on the autism spectrum, with people who have Asperger’s generally being higher functioning. People with this condition may be socially awkward and have an all-absorbing interest in specific topics.

Marissa says that Jamie has just matriculated, and he’d like to go into 3D animation.
“He is a walking dinosaur encyclopedia. He is well-versed in the anatomy of absolutely every single dinosaur. His mind is chock full of information,” said Marissa.
Jamie says he’s still weighing his options regarding his career path. “I could go into 3D animation, and as another option, I would like to work in a museum dealing with fossils and rebuilding the anatomy of the dinosaurs.”

For the moment, Jamie continues to create dinosaur models and drawings and is always looking for opportunities to learn more from other creatives.
