It can also be a stressful time as every matric learner wants their night to be perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. Planning ahead makes the preparation process a lot easier. Here are 10 essentials for the perfect matric dance.

  1. The dress or suit

It’s always the first thing that springs to mind – and with good reason. Keep an eye on current trends, but always remember to make sure it’s something you’re comfortable in and won’t leave you scratching your head in a year or two. If you are making a dress, settle on a design and colour or start looking at fabric stores for inspiration. A great way to look for dress designs is to look at celebrity red-carpet outfits; although you won’t always be able to perfectly recreate them, you can draw inspiration from the high fashion pieces. The matric dance is all about dressing to impress, after all.

  1. The date

Decide upfront if you want to go solo or with that special someone – and be confident in that choice! If you’re going as a team, make sure you’ve coordinated your looks for maximum couple effect and awesome photo opportunities!

  1. Makeup, nails and hair

Gents, keep it well-groomed and stylish and clean. Try a haircut that makes you feel and look dapper. You could also try a manicure for men and head to the spa for a facial to have you looking fresh for your big night. Ladies, remember to test out your look in advance. Make sure your look is something that will wear well throughout the night. Make sure you find a makeup artist in advance, and ensure that their style of makeup suits your preferences. Finding the right hair stylist is also something that should be done in advance, and try to find the right fit with this aspect of your look, too. A great way to do this is to check out your potential makeup or hairstylist’s social media pages to scope them out before you make a final decision. Finally, nails – find someone who can create the look you are hoping for to avoid disappointment – you can also find great nail technicians on social media.

  1. The accessories

Your accessories shouldn’t overwhelm your look – they should complement it. And remember, ladies, an elegant clutch goes a long way – perfect for keeping a few touch-up essentials on hand.

  1. The shoes

Those killer heels you’ve been eyeing are perfect for photo opportunities and your grand arrival at the dance, but remember to keep some flats on hand for the after-party! Try to avoid buying heels or formal shoes online as you may be disappointed when they arrive and run out of time to replace them. Visit a few different stores before you purchase a shoe; you may find something better at the next store and regret your choice – so it’s best not to rush this step.

  1. Get photo-ready

It’s your matric dance – there will be more photos than you know what to do with! And celebs don’t just look that good on the red carpet naturally. Find your best angle and work it! Try to find a photographer whom you are comfortable with or ask a family member whom you trust to be your designated photographer for your send-off. And most importantly, have fun in front of the camera!

  1. Pre-dance pampering

Preparing for matric dances can be a tad stressful, so book a quick massage for the morning of your dance to help bring you down to earth. You want to make the most of this night, so stress-free is your best look for the night.

  1. The send-off

This is not only a big night for you; it’s a chance for your family and friends to celebrate you, too. So putting out some snacks and drinks and making space in your living room for your loved ones to see your grand entrance (from the bedroom) is a lovely way to make them part of your big day.

  1. The ride

Limousines are old news! Get creative with your choice of transport and make a real splash when you arrive. Why not opt for a stylish classic car or maybe an ice cream truck? Make this step something that is organised a little in advance because finding a car last-minute can add to the stress of your big day.

  1. The after-party

Plan your after-party well in advance. Make sure it’s somewhere fun and safe and that has plenty of room for everyone. Ensure you’ve got your transport sorted for the night so all that’s left to do is enjoy yourself. Uber is a great bet for groups of friends who want to travel and party together.
