Glenwood matriculant passes with flying colours

Richard Kruse achieved an aggregate of 91% and placed first overall in his school, racking up eight subject distinctions.

MATRICULANT from St Henry’s Marist College Richard Kruse has graduated with flying colours, despite a challenging journey for the Class of 2022 which saw the Covid-19 pandemic break out in 2020, during their Grade 10 year.

He achieved an aggregate of 91% and placed first overall in his school. Kruse received eight subject distinctions. He scored 98% for engineering, graphics and design; 96% for German second additional language; 92% for information technology and 92% for mathematics. Richard was also placed in the top 1% of all IEB (Independent Examinations Board) candidates for engineering, graphics and design.

He plans to study computer science at Pretoria University this year. Commenting on the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kruse said he was glad the pandemic didn’t hit in his matric year.

“I’m glad Covid hit in Grade 10 and not later, because Grade 11 and 12 are much harder, and I see Grade 10 as more of a warm-up. Most of the Grade 10 classes were online, and by Grade 11, things were mostly back to normal with just a few online classes here and there. With classes online – it’s much harder to focus on your work because you don’t have someone supervising you. It’s much easier to get distracted as your teacher can’t see you; you can just see them,” said Kruse.

Speaking to Berea Mail, St Henry’s Marist College principal Stephen Leech said there was a 100% pass rate at the school.

“We are very happy with the 2022 results. Our students did us proud – most of them have Bachelor‘s Degree Passes. We are not a school that drives entirely for Bachelor‘s Passes because you might have students who have some struggles along the way, however, we do want our students to have a good pass and they have [achieved this]. Considering that they started Grade 10 with Covid and an intensive Covid-19 period, they have done very well,” he said.
