Locals to ‘bid farewell’ to Ster-Kinekor Musgrave this Sunday

The theatre is set to permanently close its doors on January 12.

AS Ster-Kinekor Theatres in Musgrave prepare to shut their doors, local community members are planning a last hurrah on Sunday.

The theatre is set to permanently close its doors on January 12. Until then, showing continues daily –  and some locals are making the most of it.

Musgrave resident Nadia Meer shared a post on the Facebook group, Everything Musgrave, inviting the community to visit the Musgrave theatre one last time – on Sunday, January 8 for the 16.15 screening of Shot Gun Wedding.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Meer said she and Hajra Vahed had started a community WhatsApp group, Musgrave Movies, ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I work in the cultural industries and live on Musgrave Road. Through our WhatsApp group, we tried really hard to start a movie club. As we were launching the club, Covid hit,” explained Meer.

The theatre holds fond memories for Meer, a long-time resident in the area.

“The theatre and, in fact, the whole centre, holds fond memories for me – even before I moved here, I lived in the Overport/Sydenham area, and this was the centre we all came to. We were delighted when things changed in 1994, and we were able to move into the area. My sons went to Durban High School, and we held a lot of birthday parties and events at Musgrave centre. And, of course, the Durban International Film Festival was also held at the centre. There were a lot of exciting times we had there. I live opposite the centre, and it was where everyone congregated. It’s very sad that they could not keep the theatre going,” said Meer.

In December, Berea Mail reported that theatre closure.

According to Musgrave Centre Management, the various lockdown periods during the Covid-19 pandemic impacted the Ster-Kinekor Group, resulting in partial and sometimes full closures of the cinema. The centre will soon open a Checkers in place of the movie theatre.

  • Despite the Stek-Kinekor closing in Musgrave, Meer is continuing to run a movie club for the community. For more information, or to join the Musgrave Movies WhatsApp group, contact Meer on 082 22 80303.
