One killed in alleged police chase

Paramedics said they responded to the scene of the accident to discover it was also a crime scene.

ONE person was killed and six more people injured after a serious crash involving a truck and a light motor vehicle on the M7 Highway near Umbilo Road (R102) occurred at approximately 13.30 today, January 3.

According to the paramedics’ reports, five patients, who were occupants of the light motor vehicle, were transported to hospitals under police guard. Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics, said they arrived on the scene of the accident to discover it was also a crime scene.

“On arrival, paramedics found chaos as SAPS had secured the scene. A vehicle, which SAPS was allegedly in pursuit of, was allegedly travelling contraflow on the Umbilo Arterial when they collided head-on into a truck on a bend,” said Jamieson.

“The driver of the light motor vehicle was found severely entrapped in the wreckage and had suffered fatal injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene. Five other occupants from the vehicle had sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and were stabilised on the scene by ALS Paramedics and EMRS before they were transported to a nearby hospital under Police Guard,” continued Jamieson.

He added that the truck driver had sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised on scene by ALS Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital while SAPS cordoned off the entire scene for further investigations.

SAPS was not available for comment at the time this article was published.
