Accident victims warn of road hazard

Two Musgrave pensioners were involved in an accident on Currie Road with a road barrier and say their car was damaged and they incurred minor injuries. The local couple hope to warn residents to be vigilant safely during the festive season.

ON the evening of Wednesday, December 7, Musgrave resident Rebecca Mungai and her husband, Didi Mungai, were driving along Currie Road, where they say the streetlights were off and the road was completely dark. Rebecca says that although she was driving slowly due to poor visibility on the road, the pair still ended up in a shocking accident due to a road barrier that was in the centre of the road. “Both of our heads snapped back, and we honestly did not see it until after the accident,” said Rebecca.

The 72-year-old Musgrave resident says that the road barrier was initially pushed to the side of the road to deter cars from a massive hole in the road, but since noticing it during her accident, the barrier is still in the centre of the road.

“We are lucky we were driving slowly and were not badly injured, but a young person or a couple with a child would be in serious trouble if they do not see that obstruction in time! It is very dangerous,” said 85-year-old Didi.

Rebecca says that she has incurred expenses due to the damage caused to the exterior and interior of her vehicle, and her and her husband are quite shaken up. “We were both shocked, and my husband’s body bumped into the dashboard area of the car during the accident, which left pain in his knees and arm – it was a very unpleasant experience.”

The couple say all they want is for the road barrier to be moved so that no one else gets hurt. “I’m not sure if the streetlights are ineffective on Currie Road – it is either that or it was load-shedding, and with load-shedding happening more frequently, what happened to us could happen to anyone, or something even worse could happen – it is very worrying,” said Rebecca.
