Christmastime traditions with Ward 31 councillor, Mckenzie

Ward 31 councillor Remona Mckenzie shares what Christmastime is like for her and her family when the work rush takes a pause.

CHRISTMAS is a time to unwind from the year’s stresses, a time for family bonding and a time to make special memories with loved ones. It can also be a time for reflection – to think about what positive changes could be made to your life and what negative influences should be removed. Not everyone has the same Christmas traditions, but what makes each person and each family’s Christmas special is that it is unique to them.

Ward 31 councillor Remona Mckenzie shared what Christmastime is like for her and her family when the work rush takes a pause.

Q: How do you and your family celebrate Christmas?

A: I would normally prepare lunch the day before. We have always had a late lunch because my family waits for me. We take recessional leave. Meaning, it’s not really leave. Last Christmas, on Christmas day, I was on-site at a burst pipe trying to get water back to my community. We are not extravagant as I have always said to my family to think of the less fortunate. We like to decorate the Christmas tree together. I normally volunteer my time at the Denis Hurley Centre by setting the tables and decorating the hall in preparation for the Christmas lunch for the less fortunate.

Q: Let’s talk gifts! Do you prefer something small, sweet and homemade or do you splurge to spoil your loved ones?

A: I normally buy gifts for the family. I am happy with whatever I receive because I believe it’s the thought that makes it special. The fact that someone thinks of buying a gift for you means that you are in their thoughts. Not many people have the luxury of receiving a gift. Most of the time, it’s always me buying the gifts, and I never expect one back. We must learn to give without expecting anything in return.

Q: What are the must-have items on your Christmas table that you can’t go without?

A: I enjoy pasta and roast meat.

Q: What is your favourite thing about Christmas?

A: My favourite part about Christmas is getting to spend time with my family. I hardly spend time with my family during the year because of the workload. Also, I enjoy the preparation to attend church. This is very important for me. I hold my religion in high regard, and I love God. I believe that without Him, we are lost. I pray and seek guidance from him at all times.

Q: What’s your favourite Christmas song?

My favourite song would be Silent Knight.
