Musgrave movie theatre will close in January

According to a Musgrave Centre representative, the closure of the cinema complex is as a result of the Musgrave Centre management making use of the area for extra retail space.

STER-KINEKOR Theatres has announced that its cinema complex in Musgrave Centre, Durban, will be closed with effect from January 12, 2023. According to a Ster-kinekor representative, all Ster-Kinekor staff who were employed at the Musgrave Centre complex will be reassigned to other Ster-Kinekor sites.

“Durban cinemagoers can still enjoy ‘great moments at their greatest’ on the big screen at Ster-Kinekor Gateway and Watercrest,” said the representative.

The cinema was revamped in late 2019, and after having been shut for five months since late March in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in a national lockdown, Ster-Kinekor re-opened its cinemas on August 28, and the movie theatre in Musgrave seemed to be doing well.

The news was shared on Facebook by Berea resident David Richard Walker, and residents who frequented the local movie theatre shared their dismay. “That’s so sad. Movies at Musgrave was so convenient for us who live in the area,” said local resident Ria Black. Another local resident, Tyrell Elijah, commented: “Will miss the movies there – now we must go so far out for the cinema.”

Mark M Wade says that cinemas are facing serious challenges due to the variety of options available for viewers. “There’s such a choice of streaming channels, that cinemas are facing a real challenge.”

The Musgrave movie theatre has been a staple for Berea residents since its establishment in 1993, and it’s fair to say that residents are sad to see it close.
