Umbilo SAPS welcomes new station commander

The newly appointed station commander said his mission is to keep the Umbilo precinct safe and ensure that the crime rate is squeezed to zero.

SINCE bidding farewell to Col Teddy Munusamy in September of this year, Lt Col Richard Ximba has been officially appointed as the station commander at Umbilo SAPS.

Ximba says he is grateful to General Kheswa, the District Commissioner of Ethekwini for recommending him to be appointed as the new station commander of Umbilo SAPS.

As Ximba takes over the role of acting station commander, his primary focus is to continue Munusamy’s work.

“I would also like to thank the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mkhwanzi for appointing me to be the station commander of Umbilo SAPS,” said Ximba.

The newly appointed station commander said his mission is to keep the Umbilo precinct safe and ensure that the crime rate is squeezed to zero. “One reported case is too much,” said Ximba.

“The national commissioner and the provincial commissioner have made it clear that the best policing strategy is sector-specific policing. This strategy was amended in 2013 and became National Instruction in March of 2013,” said Ximba.

According to the station commissioner, the objectives and aims of sector-specific policing is to prevent crime by:
– Encouraging visible and accessible policing to the community.
– Improving response time.
– Improving investigation tactics.
– Establishing an informer network.
– Close corporation and partnership with the community.
– Police understanding local problems/challenges by identifying and addressing the underlying causes.
– Rendering a quality service with the support of the local community and improving trust and confidence in the police.

In 2004, Ximba was deployed to the Point SAPS, and in 2008, he was sent to Nkandla for two years where he worked as a detective. He was deployed to the Pinetown SAPS where he worked until he was appointed as the provincial commander for taxi violence in 2013. In 2015, Ximba was appointed as branch commander for Umbilo SAPS.
