Motorists fall prey to smash-and-grab robberies in Umbilo and Glenwood

One of the complainants was robbed while they stopped at a traffic light on Rick Turner Road.

UMBILO SAPS have urged motorists to be vigilant after two smash-and-grab robberies and a cash-in-transit hijacking on Monday, November 7.

According to the spokesperson for Umbilo SAPS, Captain Phumzile Makaula, the complainant was robbed while they stopped at a traffic light on Rick Turner Road at approximately 18:00.

“According to the complainant, an armed suspect smashed the front passenger window and grabbed a bag from the seat. Inside the bag was a laptop and cash. The suspect ran away,” said Makaula.

SAPS are investigating a case of armed robbery involving an A4 Audi and a silver double-cab bakkie in another incident, also on November 7. According to Makaula, a security company was collecting cash from a Glenwood supermarket at 09:30 when an armed suspect accosted a security guard.

“The guard alleges that as he approached the cash vehicle, he was approached by a suspect who pointed a firearm at him. The suspect demanded the cash and the guard’s firearm. Three other suspects were waiting in two vehicles next to the supermarket. They loaded the cash in the back of the double cab and fired shots towards the security vehicle and drove away,” said Makaula.
