EThekwini unites King Misuzulu with forefathers

The large picture painted on the wall serves as one of eThekwini's tourist attraction symbols.

ALMOST two weeks after the certificate of recognition was handed over to King Misuzulu kaZwelethini, his name has been added to the mural depicting historical Zulu kings.

King Misuzulu ascended to the throne after the passing of his father, King Goodwill Zwelithini, last year, and a traditional ceremony called Ukungena Esibayeni (Entering the Kraal) was performed in Nongoma on August 20 this year to install him.

This ritual is conducted to introduce the new king to the ancestors as the successor of the late leader.

Two weeks ago, on October 29, in a ceremony held at Moses Mabhida Stadium, President Cyril Ramaphosa presented the certificate of recognition as the 9th Zulu king to King Misuzulu.

Last week, the eThekwini Municipality unveiled the mural with the faces of the previous Zulu kings, who are since departed, which now includes King Misuzulu’s face. The kings have been painted on the mural in accordance with their succession from King Shaka to the current king.

The mural is situated along Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street and Dr AB Xuma in the Durban CBD.
