Umbilo SAPS warn motorists to be vigilant after armed hijackings

Two motorists were hijacked at gunpoint over the weekend. SAPS have since recovered the vehicles.

UMBILO SAPS has warned the community to be vigilant as a scourge of hijackings continue in the area. This after two armed hijackings occurred on Saturday, October 22.

In one incident, a motorist was hijacked at gunpoint at a petrol station on King Dinizulu Road.
“According to the complainant, five men attacked him, and one of them pointed a firearm at him after he had just put petrol in. They forced him out of the vehicle and drove away in it,” said Captain Phumzile Makaula, spokesperson for Umbilo SAPS.

According to Makaula, the complainant’s vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla Quest, was recovered in Inanda.

“Police are investigating a case of hijacking,” she said.

On the same day, at 20:30, there was another hijacking incident on Teignmouth Road.

“According to the complainant, he was dropping off a relative when he noticed a white Suzuki parking behind him. Two suspects got out of it and approached him. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at him and forced him out of the vehicle. The suspects drove away in both vehicles,” said Makaula.

The vehicle was recovered in Umlazi.
“It is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times,” said Makaula, urging motorists to be vigilant on the roads.
