Women in the spotlight for the final concert of KZN Philharmonic’s 2022 Spring Season

A WOMAN soloist and a woman conductor are in the spotlight for the final concert in the KZN Philharmonic’s 2022 Spring Season on Thursday, October 27 in the Playhouse Opera at 19:00.

An eclectic programme of beautiful music closes the KZN Philharmonic’s 2022 Spring Season on Thursday, October 27 in the Playhouse Opera – including Symphony No 1 by Mendelssohn – written when he was 15 years old!

Between the ages of 12 and 14, Mendelssohn composed 13 symphonies for strings. He also produced songs, piano pieces, operas, and chamber music, and most famously his overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, all written before he was 17 years old.

Mendelssohn follows in the footsteps of fellow musical child prodigy, Mozart, who started composing at the age of five and wrote his first opera at age 10.

Noted young Israeli conductor Noam Aviel takes to the podium on October 27. Aviel, one of today’s select group of women conductors to make her mark internationally, opens the programme with Gabriel Faure’s hugely popular, ascetically rewarding Pelléas et Mélisande Suite.

Acclaimed Serbian-French cellist Maja Bogdanovic, living now between Amsterdam and Chicago, Illinois, while travelling the world, takes centre stage as the evening’s soloist, performing Camille Saint-Saëns’ fiery Cello Concerto No 1.

Bogdanovic is an orchestra musician, a chamber musician and a recording artist, and within her wide repertoire, she devotes a special place to contemporary music.

The third piece of the evening is Gabriel Faure’s lovely Élégie for Cello and Orchestra. The evening closes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 1.
