Durbanites have a blast at Diwali Fest

The open-air event was hosted by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha.

THE Durban Diwali Festival  returned to Durban this past weekend on October 15–16 after two years of restrictions under the Covid-19 pandemic. With free entrance for the public, Durbanites came out to enjoy a day of food, traditional dance performances and live music.

The open-air event was hosted by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha outside of The Globe at Suncoast.

“The festival has grown beyond just song and dance, with weekend festivities centred on community upliftment and spiritual and cultural awareness. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Light up our Lives’, which is fitting for this celebration of light that draws people from all walks of life, races, religions and cultures,” said festival director Neeran Besesar.

Crowds filled the space over the two-day event, and with an epic fireworks display produced by Indian Fireworks to close off each day, a blast was had by all.

This was one of three major firework displays Indian Fireworks produces per year, including the India Fair and eThekwini’s New Year’s Eve event.
