Brother who found late Durban couple shares touching tribute

They were not just memorable. They were inspirational. They were the brightest lights in an often dark world.

TRIBUTES poured in this week after the tragic passing of Durban couple, Nicholas (35) and Matri (34) Molver on Wednesday, September 28, following a chemical fumigation at a neighbouring flat.

Luke Molver, brother to Nicholas, arrived at the Currie Road flat to check on the couple when they did not show up for work or respond to phone calls.

“I entered their apartment with a spare key, thinking they had merely overslept, but that was not the case,” said Molver. “There are moments in life that can tear your entire being apart in a single, terrible, incomprehensible instant. Nobody should ever have to experience those moments, but we are human, and we must endure. And that is what we will do,” said Molver.

Molver described Nicholas as a multi-skilled communications officer and Matri, a talented graphic designer. They lived in a flat in Observatory Court that has been in the Molver family for decades.

Tributes have poured in this week, from a community reeling in shock.

“There has been an outpouring of support from all over the world, and I think this is a testimony to how loved and respected my brother and sister-in-law were, and how many lives they touched, no matter how briefly. Oftentimes, a condolence can seem a mere formality, but the shock of their sudden passing is contrasted by the amazing, genuine sincerity and love that has been flooding in from all over the world,” said Molver.

Molver shared this tribute to the couple:

“Nick’s calm and empathetic demeanour was contrasted only by the passion he put into everything he did. Matri’s gentle warmth diffused a cold world, and it came from a fire of kindness that burned within her. A brightness that exploded from her smile and her laughter, of which she gave so freely. Together, they radiated a generosity of spirit that is all too rare. Nick and Matri were not just friendly, they were selfless. They were not just kind, they were compassionate. They were not just memorable. They were inspirational. They were the brightest lights in an often dark world, and while it may seem even darker now, those lights are not extinguished. They are inside us, and we will carry them with pride and joy and love.”

An investigation is launched

Captain Poobalan Naidoo of Berea SAPS confirmed that an investigation has been launched.

“I can confirm that a case of inquest has been opened. I cannot comment on this as the investigation is ongoing,” said Naidoo.

Molver said the parties involved are known to the family and investigators, adding that legal action will be taken.

“I cannot comment as the investigation is ongoing, but I will say that multiple laws and by-laws were contravened,” he said.

The family is now working to raise awareness and stricter regulations.
