Berea SAPS recover unlicensed gun amid spike in armed robberies

Police noticed a suspicious vehicle when patrolling the Currie Road area and stopped and searched the occupants and their vehicles. 

THREE suspects were arrested after the SAPS caught them red-handed with an unlicensed firearm.

Captain Parboo Naidoo, spokesperson for Berea SAPS, said the discovery comes after a recent spike in armed robberies in the area.

“Our patrol area has recently been experiencing robberies on the street with a firearm being used,” said Naidoo.

The arrest was made on Thursday, September 15 during a routine patrol in the Berea area.

“Police were patrolling along Currie Road near Botanic Avenue when they noticed a suspicious, dark-coloured motor vehicle with no number plate in the front. There were three occupants in the vehicle,” said Naidoo.

Police stopped and searched the occupants and their vehicles.

“One unlicensed firearm, with a serial number filed off, was found hidden in the vehicle, loaded with one magazine and six live rounds. Suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and detained at Berea SAPS,” said Naidoo.
