Suspect faces court for rape of 16-year-old

The suspect was arrested on Friday, September 16 after arriving at Durban Central SAPS with the victim who opened a case against him.

A MAN, aged 31, suspected of forcefully raping a 16-year-old victim, will face the Durban Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, September 19.

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Zanele Khomo said the suspect was arrested on Friday, September 16 after arriving at Durban Central SAPS with the victim to open a case.

“The victim and the suspect came to the police station. The victim opened a case, and the suspect acted as if he didn’t know anything about it. Police then interviewed the victim and arrested the suspect. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation,” said Khomo.

According to Khomo, the victim was raped in the early hours of the morning at 04:30, along Sylvester Ntuli Road after leaving a nearby casino with the suspect.

“The victim was at the casino when she met an unknown male who was there to gamble. The casino closed at 04:00, and all were forced to leave the premises. The unknown male asked to go with the complainant to an ATM at North Beach,” said Khomo.

Khomo added that on the way to the ATM, on Sylvester Ntuli Road, the suspect threatened the complainant before forcefully raping her.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court today for charges of rape.
