NPO hosts carpentry workshop

The course began with a theory class a week prior to the practical lesson on cabinet-building.

THE Zinoju Skills offices were a hive of activity recently as the non-profit organisation hosted a woodworking class. Sibusisiwe Nxumalo led a carpentry course to impart her skills and empower community members.

The course began with a theory class a week prior to the practical lesson on cabinet-building.

“During the class, participants learnt how to build drawers and how to use a staple gun before completing the cabinet,” said Nxumalo.

Zinoju Skills aims to assist members of the community to find employment, but they teach skills that can be monetised.

For Alvina Matsau, who took part in the carpentry workshop, the skills learnt will also help her to save money at home.

“I found the course most interesting. There will be no wardrobes or cabinets thrown out in my home now that I have learnt this skill. I will be able to repair my own furniture,” commented Matsau.

Founded by Umbilo resident Zanele Khaloli, Zinoju Skills offers skills development and entrepreneurial training to the Berea community.

Khaloli was inspired to help others during the Covid-19 pandemic when she saw her community struggling with job losses and financial struggles.

“I decided to give back to the community. People have got talents and skills that need to be enhanced – the NPO came about when we decided to step in and help them,” she said.

Zinoju Skills – which was officially registered as an NPO in May, is based on King DiniZulu Road in the heart of Berea. With her new offices, Khaloli is able to offer a workspace to clients, complete with free Wi-Fi. Khaloli explained that she will assist job seekers by finding out what they are passionate about and linking them up with industry professionals who can offer advice and guidance.

“We also host business workshops on how to run a business and how to manage your finances as an entrepreneur in the SMME sector. Once people start their business, they need to be mentored in some ways. That mentorship is available here until we can see they are able to stand on their own,” said the NPO founder.
