Police seek assistance in nabbing suspects

Police ask residents to be on high alert after two rape cases last month and seek assistance from the public to come forward with information that would aid them in capturing the suspects.

DURBAN Central SAPS and the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit are asking residents to be on high alert after two rape cases were reported last month. Police are still looking for the perpetrators and have released images of the alleged attackers, warning people to be on guard.

Incident 1

According to Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, a provincial police spokesperson, detectives at the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit are making an appeal to members of the community for assistance with regard to the whereabouts of the man believed to be linked to a rape case they are investigating.

“A 22-year-old female was sexually assaulted by two men on July 15, 2022, at 20:00, while she was in a taxi on her way to Mayville. The victim said that when she reached Mayville, the driver and his assistant refused to drop her off and threatened her with a firearm and knife. They drove to Cato Manor sports ground where they gang-raped her and robbed her of her money and cellphone. Charges of rape and robbery were opened at the Cato Manor police station, and they transferred the docket to Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation,” said Gwala.

“Members of the community may also communicate information via the MYSAPS APP,” said the police spokesperson.

Incident 2

The Durban Central Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit detectives are seeking assistance in solving a case of rape and assault they are investigating.

“It is believed that on July 1, 2022, at about 10:50, a 59-year-old victim was at a hotel on Umgeni Road with her husband. They had an argument, and her husband assaulted her and invited an unknown male. An unknown male came into their hotel room, and her husband instructed him to rape her. A case of rape was opened at Durban Central police station and transferred to Durban Central Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation,” said Captain Muzi Maphumulo of the Durban Central SAPS.

“We appeal to anyone who might have information regarding the man in the distributed picture to contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Tshabalala, on  084 891 7287 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he said.
