Time capsule buried at Durban university

DUT plans to open the time capsule in April 2031 and reflect on the objectives set out in the capsule.

A TIME capsule was buried at Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently to highlight the university’s goals for the decade ahead.

The university unveiled the ENVISION2030 DNA Helix Monument and Time Capsule on Friday, August 26 at the Steve Biko Campus in Durban.

DUT’s vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, deposited a letter into the time capsule, which is addressed to the future vice-chancellor and principal of DUT – yet to be elected – who will open the time capsule in April 2031.

In this 14-page letter, Mthembu explains the objectives of the ENVISION2030 strategy.

“I hope in your experience of DUT and its people, you will see the evidence radiating from our people, systems and infrastructure, that you will witness the aspirational characteristics we set out in our 2030 Statement of Intent. The intent is that our people be creative, innovative, entrepreneurial and adaptive to changes in the world; further, that they participate productively in the development of our locality, region, country and the world, and that our state-of-the-art infrastructure and systems will enhance the ecosystem created to achieve this vision,” writes Prof Mthembu.
