Feed The Babies Fund set to host fun night in Musgrave

To be a part of one of their fundraising campaigns, join Feed the Babies Fund for their Girls Night Out! fundraiser on Thursday, September 1 at Coastlands Musgrave Hotel.

FEED the Babies Fund’s fight against malnutrition began with powdered milk and health cereal distributions to starving children through clinics. In 1957, lecturers from the then University of Natal saw wisps of smoke rising from the Cato Manor area, and upon investigation, found up to 400 children suffering from malnutrition in the squalid conditions of the developing informal settlement. Their parents, due mainly to poverty and unemployment, were living in the area as they could find nowhere else to live and wanted to be near the city in an effort to source work. Led by Dr Zelda Jacobson, a lecturer in social science, a dedicated team of doctors and health workers implemented a supplementary feeding scheme to help the starving children. With the assistance of the Union of Jewish Women, Feed the Babies Fund was established that same year.

Since then, the organisation has expanded and has aided in improving the circumstances in several rural areas across KwaZulu-Natal.

“There has been a lot of change over the years. We must keep ahead of all the developments in the ECD sector, and our CEO, Dean Groenink, ensures that we are all kept up to date with any changes/laws that might affect our projects and impact the way we implement them. Feed the Babies Fund has had a school fundraising project that has lasted for many years, and we continue with this form of fundraising and awareness. Social Media is also a very good source of awareness for our projects and allows us to post about our various projects, adding visuals as it is almost impossible to try and communicate the needs of the rural ECD Centres. We have found that word-of-mouth is the way awareness is spread in the rural communities about Feed the Babies Fund and the assistance we give. We also get inquiries via our Facebook page and email,” said the organisation’s marketing manager, Sandy Davies.

She says that they stay afloat because of support from the community and other organisations. “We are very fortunate to have monthly donors and funds and foundations that believe in and support our focus and objectives. These funds and foundations fund us annually for our projects.”
