Vehicle carrying children loses control on freeway
This afternoon, ALS Paramedics responded to a horrific single-vehicle collision on the M4 Southern Freeway that caused a man to be fatally injured and several children injured, too – some critical.
A HORRIFIC accident this afternoon on the M4 Southern Freeway, between Edwin Swales and Victoria Embankment, has killed one man and left several children critically injured.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, paramedics responded to the scene just before 15:30 today on Saturday, August 20.
“On arrival, paramedics were faced with carnage as they found a bakkie carrying multiple passengers – believed to be a children‘s soccer team – that had somehow lost control and rolled numerous times, ejecting all the occupants onto the roadway,” said Jamieson.

Jamieson said that more ambulances, as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics, were immediately dispatched to assist.
“One person, a male believed to be in his thirties, had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. A further thirteen people had sustained various injuries with two being critically injured,” he said.

The paramedic spokesperson said that once stabilised, all of the injured were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required.
“At this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown, however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
