Port Natal Citadel set to host new traders market

The upcoming Citadel Market will be hosted on Saturday, August 27, from 12:00 until 16:00.

GET ready for the Citadel Market, an extension of the R50 Flea Market hosted at the Port Natal Citadel in Glenwood, coming this August! The definition of a citadel is a thriving city within a city, and this is the blueprint goal of the Citadel Market.

According to the Citadel Market marketing director, Glenwood resident Karen Brokensha, the R50 Flea Market has extended to more than just a flea market and now includes a gin and jewellery-making evening, a beer-tasting and burger night, various creative-soul workshops and classical music recitals.

“It has been such fun creating a tapestry of events to build homegrown businesses and to connect with one another in our community through food, the arts and crafts,” said Brokensha.

“Sadly, our last market hosted at the end of May 2022 was not as successful as the previous two, although we raised R1 000 for the iThemba Lethu Breast Milk Bank, which was very rewarding – to help vulnerable babies in need of breast milk,” she said.

The organisers have added some exciting innovations to make this market an epic experience for residents. “We have done some soul-searching homework with traders and have decided to tweak a few things: Firstly, giving it a formal brand name, the Citadel Market; then we will be moving away from the R50 selling price ceiling to allow for a greater diversity of products, and all sales will work through a central token system to be bought at the door. Various payment facilities will be available,” said Brokensha.

The upcoming Citadel Market will be hosted on Saturday, August 27, from 12:00 until 16:00.
“We will have a selection of traders selling items such as boerewors rolls, avocado sandwiches, coffee, cakes, cool drinks, crafts, preloved clothing and décor, plants, massages, beauty products, perfume, and art,” says Brokensha.

The Citadel Market operates from The Port Natal Citadel located at 455 Esther Roberts Road in Glenwood.
According to Brokensha, the stalls will be in the hall as well as outside the venue, and parking will be available where car guards will be in attendance.
