5 tips to recover – World Hangover Day

Here are some sneaky tricks to prevent a hangover and a few ways to do damage control.

INTERNATIONAL Beer day has come and gone, and it’s time to face the music – that’s right, today, August 6, is World Hangover Day, here to remind us just what happens when we have too much of a good thing.

If you are feeling like a dog’s breakfast today, dim that screen and read on – here are five tips to nurse a hangover and how to have better luck next time.

We aren’t sure if these are scientifically proven – but it’s probably worth a shot – sorry, poor choice of words. It’s probably worth a try.

1. OK but first, breakfast

The first step to relieving a hangover is to rustle up some grub as alcohol can leave blood sugar levels a little low. A hearty, healthy breakfast can help to replenish blood sugar levels and give you the stamina to brave the hangover storm.  According to Healthline, studies suggest a type of amino acid known as  L-cysteine, can help with a hangover. The good news is this amino acid is found in eggs, yoghurt and oats – even if you may be reaching for something deep-fried and smothered in chocolate, try to add some L-cysteine-rich foods into the mix.

2. Hydration station

Since alcohol is a diuretic, a night of heavy drinking probably involved plenty of trips to the bathroom, leaving you rather dehydrated. Your water bottle is your best friend for the next 24 hours. You could also try an electrolyte sachet or add a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt to a glass of water – to create your own makeshift electrolyte mixture.

3. Trusty tablets

If the hydration station has failed to dull that headache, then it might be time to take a painkiller. Supplements like Vitamin B or multivitamin tablets can also help to combat the post-party slump.

4. From whining to winning

Here is a top tip for the wine drinkers out there. Grab a sulphite neutralizer from your local pharmacy – these clever drops can be added to wine to combat sulphite side effects, including headaches.

5. Walk into the light

If you are a spirit drinker, you can reduce the hangover potential by opting for vodka, gin or light rum rather than darker spirits like whiskey and brandy. Opting for light beer is also a great idea if you are having a few – you will thank yourself later.
