Nostalgia as much-loved Maritzburg Show at the Showgrounds returns

The highly anticipated Umeda Maritzburg Show kicks-off from October 10 to October 20, bringing a carnival atmosphere and an action-packed schedule of events to the Pietermaritzburg Showgrounds. With something for everyone, the show promises a vibrant mix of cultural performances, entertainment, and exciting family activities.

Cultural Extravaganza

At the heart of this year’s show is a rich celebration of culture. The grand finale on October 20, Maskandi Day, will be a standout event. Headlined by Themba Njilo’s Pride of Africa dance group, attendees will be treated to a dynamic 30-minute performance showcasing traditional African dances.

“We’re excited to show Pietermaritzburg what we have to offer,” said Njilo, who has seen his dancers perform internationally. In addition to Pride of Africa, top dance clubs from district schools will perform, opening for musicians across genres including gospel, maskandi, amapiano, and bhangra.

The Maritzburg Show also offers a fantastic opportunity to experience local talent and cultural diversity, bringing the community together through music, dance, and artistic expression. James Martin, head organiser of the show, said, “We are thrilled to have such phenomenal local talent at the show. It will be a wonderful showcase of our city’s cultural richness.”

Entertainment for All Ages

The show’s carnival atmosphere wouldn’t be complete without the return of the funfair, which promises thrilling rides and games for the whole family. A dedicated children’s jumping castle and an extensive food court area will keep young ones entertained while parents relax and enjoy a variety of delicious offerings.

Concerts

The Maritzburg Show will feature a variety of concert, with celebrity performances across multiple genres, including the Jesus Praise Celebration on October 17. uMgungundlovu Christian Council chairperson Vidyl Marion said this year’s event is a chance for the Christian community to gather, with a praise team made up of musicians and lead singers from churches across the district. The event will also feature recording gospel artists and a prayer for the prosperity of the district.

Marion emphasised the event’s focus on providing support to the community, with organisations such as African Enterprise, Pietermaritzburg Homeless Network, and Broken Crayons Still Colour offering guidance and mentorship. African Enterprise’s Gary Almeida highlighted the church’s social responsibility, stating, “Gospel is about word and deed,” and the importance of supporting gender-based violence victims and career-seekers.

Cars

Car enthusiasts can look forward to The Phat Stance 2k24, taking place on October 12 at the Maritzburg Show. This event is a celebration of automotive culture, offering competitions such as the Show and Shine for R250, and the Sound Off challenge, where participants can showcase their car audio systems for R200. Organised by The Phat Events, this gathering promises a community atmosphere where enthusiasts can share their passion for custom vehicles. Sports

For sports fans, the Maritzburg Show also brings a thrilling sports lineup, with professional arm wrestling and martial arts exhibitions.

From professional wrestling to a spectacular mixed martial arts (MMA) display led by Mustang Athletic’s Wayne Raman, attendees can witness top-tier athletes in action. Raman, an internationally renowned MMA coach, promises an educational experience, featuring martial arts demonstrations and lessons on self-defence and discipline. “We want to promote the positive side of martial arts and create balance and discipline in people’s lives,” said Raman.

David Muil, founding member of the South African Arm-Wrestling Federation, will showcase his expertise alongside other top athletes. With his career highlights including first in South Africa and sixth globally, Muil is excited about the event’s potential to attract newcomers to these sports.

The Showgrounds will be packed with exhibitors, including the city’s main vehicle brands, food vendors, and a special section dedicated to nurseries and gardening exhibitors. “This show will help boost the local economy and provide opportunities for those who are unemployed to earn an income,” said uMgungundlovu District Municipality spokesperson Nonhlanhla Gabela.

Vuka Darkie and Women in Business, two prominent local groups, have secured halls for the event, showcasing their commitment to promoting economic growth and empowering local entrepreneurs. uMgungundlovu District Mayor Mzi Zuma expressed excitement about the public-private partnership that has made the show possible, noting how important such events are for the region’s growth. “There has been a lot of pressure for the resuscitation of the show, and we are happy to say it’s back with many of the offerings people have loved in the past,” said Zuma. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between local government and private entities, saying, “Public-private partnerships like this show what we can achieve when we work together.”
