Durban woman sentenced for R500 000 Road Accident Fund corruption

After five years of in-depth investigation and court appearances, a Durban woman has been convicted of corruption following her solicitation of half a million rand from a Road Accident Fund claimant. She will serve 10 years of a 12-year sentence.

ON Monday, October 14, the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court sentenced Nobuhle Magwaza (45) for corruption which happened when she was employed by the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo of the HAWKS explained, “In November 2019, Magwaza was employed as a claims and legal officer. During the course of her work, she demanded R500 000.00 gratification from the claimant. She requested R50 000.00 to be paid in cash whilst the balance of R450 000.00 was to be deposited into her bank account once the claim was finalised.

“The official solicited the gratification from the claimant so that she could fast-track the processing and authorisation of a R2.7 million claim which was due to the claimant. A case of corruption was reported to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation, and an undercover operation was conducted.

“Magwaza was arrested in February 2020, and she was released on bail. She appeared in court several times until she was found guilty. She was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment of which two years are suspended for five years. Thus, Magwaza will serve 10 years direct imprisonment.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, welcomed the sentence and applauded the members for their good work.
