Fun walk turns spotlight on mental illness

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10, hundreds of walkers are expected to fill the Durban Beachfront this weekend to raise their voices on mental illness. This is an open call to the general public, including those who are not directly affected, to create awareness.

WITH a medal in one hand and an ice cream in another, all our walkers are definitely going to leave with a smile when they join in the fun that is the KZN Mental Health Walk and Wellness Fair.

Hundreds of people are expected to turn up for the annual event, hosted by the KZN Mental Health Advocacy Group that clinical psychologist Suntosh Pillay started with his colleague, Prof Suvira Ramlall. The free event takes place on Sunday, October 6, at 09:00, ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10.

“The advocacy group, an independent network of volunteers and activists, has grown the walk into a flagship provincial event, with ongoing support from the community and generous sponsors of fruit, water, caps and medals handed out to participants,” shared Pillay.

“Our goal is to encourage open and honest conversations about how to treat mental illness and promote mental health. This event brings people together to destigmatise these conversations. We urge the public to show up in their numbers because this is more than a walk. Bring your placards and write messages that voice your concerns about mental health service delivery, or make a poster with supportive and encouraging slogans to inspire empathy and hope,” said Pillay.

Walkers are encouraged to wear green in support of October being Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa. There will be free 30-minute sessions on aerobics, Zumba, yoga, kickboxing and dancing, and face painting for the kids.
