Durban ICC wins global award – again

Another one in the bag! There is just no stopping Durban’s International Convention Centre from bagging global awards for being a leading meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) venue.

FOLLOWING the counting of votes, Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) has become a World MICE Awards 2024 winner yet again – it has been judged South Africa’s Best Convention Centre 2024. It also won this title in 2020.

The Durban ICC beat other South African nominees for 2024 – the Cape Town International Convention Centre, CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria and Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The CEO of Durban ICC Ms Lindiwe Rakharebe received the award on behalf of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and South Africa at a red-carpet World MICE Awards Gala Ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Wednesday (September 4).

The World MICE Awards recognise and reward excellence in meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition (MICE) tourism worldwide.

Ms Rakharebe said, “While we have a track record for clinching MICE Awards, we decided we would not rest on our laurels and hence went all out to bring the shield again to Durban in 2024 for being South Africa’s Best Convention Centre. A successful MICE destination is more than just business – it must create a memorable experience for delegates.”

While the trophy cabinet at the Durban ICC is straining under the weight of the silverware acquired over the years, Rakharebe said winning awards is a visible demonstration of all the behind-the-scenes hard work from the Durban ICC teams and people whose principal focus is to continuously provide world-class customer service to clients, both local and international.

“It is for this reason that the close-knit team strives to maintain the Durban ICC’s inherent culture of warmth and hospitality that we are known for and strives to ensure that each guest leaves the Durban ICC happy and satisfied with the service received,” she said.

Congratulating the Durban ICC, eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba said the recognition received by the world-renowned facility will help boost business confidence in Durban as the news follows the re-opening of the Hilton Hotel which is located near the ICC.
“As the leadership of the city, we welcome the news of Durban ICC being voted as the best convention centre in South Africa. This prestigious award, bagged by the ICC for the second time in a space of four years, cements the convention centre’s track record of hosting world-class events and its exceptional contribution to the events industry,” Xaba said.

Since its opening in 1997 by former president Nelson Mandela, as South Africa’s first International Convention Centre, Durban ICC has played a pioneering role in attracting international events to South Africa.
