TODAY, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) unveiled five tugboats to add to its fleet in an effort to improve port congestion at the Port of Durban.
TNPA is accelerating the implementation of its R1 billion investment towards a reliable marine fleet with the latest addition.
During a christening ceremony held at the Port of Durban, TNPA officially launched and named the latest fleet. This forms part of TNPA’s Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, which prioritises the acquisition of marine assets to strengthen shipping operations at the ports.
The five tugboats were named Sepelong, Vhutshilo, Selemo, Mokwapha and Lewatle – all females. These names were suggested by TNPA employees.

Representing eThekwini Municipality, Councillor Thembo Ntuli said, “The addition of the tugboats will contribute immensely to the revival of the blue economy in the city. We support all the strategies by TNPA to boost and grow the economy of Durban as an international player. We congratulate the port on this milestone as it will see a reduction in congestion, even on the roads. This move will also unlock opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.”
As per tradition, the boats were blessed and smashed with champagne, preparing them for the journeys ahead.
