March calls for ceasefire

People of Durban took to the streets to call for peace in the Middle East as thousands of people perish in Palestine in the deadly Israel and Hamas war

HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Florida Road in Durban last Saturday, on November 18, in support of the people of Palestine. Protestors chanted ‘Free Palestine’ while calling for an immediate ceasefire as the deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

The march was organised by the United for Palestine coalition group. Various political parties and organisations also lent their voices to a call for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn region. “We are calling for a full opening of humanitarian corridors, and calling for an end of Israeli occupation and the liberation of Palestine from apartheid.

“We demand the end of apartheid in Israel and to stop the senseless killing of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank,” said Abdool Valodia – president of United for Palestine. Among the marchers was paramilitary group of the African National Congress (ANC), uMkhonto we Sizwe, who joined in the march.

“We were fortunate enough to be joined by our comrades from uMkhonto we Sizwe who reaffirmed the message that in the end, resistance against injustice will prevail. “They also gave us hope as South Africans who have achieved freedom with their assistance, that one day soon, Palestine will be free from the river to the sea, giving the people of Palestine their own self-determination to ensure that they choose leaders who are just, equitable and believe in freedom for all,” Valodia said.
