Gun violence wreaks havoc in Durban

Gun violence escalates in Durban as numerous shootings take place around the central part of the city.

THERE have been numerous incidents of gun violence in Durban these past few weeks. Last night, just before 22:00, the DRK EMS Paramedics and DRK Tactical Control Centre received numerous calls for a shooting that occurred in the Berea area.

“According to witnesses, an unknown male went into a shop and ordered fried chips, then asked the owner of the shop if he could charge his phone. He then proceeded to pay for his chips and went to sit down to wait for his phone to be charged.

“After some time, the suspect wanted to leave but found that his phone had not been charged. An argument ensued between him and the owner, which escalated to the suspect pulling out a firearm and shooting the shop owner, who sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.

“When the DRK EMS Paramedics and DRK Tactical officers arrived at the scene, they found the owner had been fatally wounded and was declared dead at the scene,” said Cait Hagerman, DRK Tactical spokesperson.

In a separate incident earlier in the day, a security guard was robbed of his firearm by unknown suspects in the Durban Central area. Shots were fired, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
