Do something for orphans on World Orphans Day

This day helps to bring attention to the millions of children around the world who are living without parents or guardians.

TODAY, November 13, the globe commemorates World Orphans Day to raise awareness about the plight of orphans and to highlight the work being done by charities and organisations that provide them with love, care and shelter.

It is reported that there are over 153 million orphans worldwide, therefore, this day is significant to demonstrate commitment to helping these vulnerable children reach their full potential.

Recently, Stats SA released South Africa’s Census 2022 results that show a decrease in the percentage of children aged 0–17 who are orphans in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal observed the highest decrease in all orphanhood types – maternal, paternal and double orphans – from 2011 to 2022.

“Trends show that there has been a decrease in orphanhood, and this is the case for all the three types,” says statistician-general Risenga Maluleke.

As the world observes World Orphans Day, here’s what you can do on this day:

Organise a charity drive

It isn’t necessary to organise a charity drive on a grand level. You can arrange one in your school, church or neighbourhood and collect funds for children. You can collect clothes, books and toys. If you are donating used toys or clothes, ensure they are clean and still in good form.

Prepare a meal

There is no feeling better than feeding others with food that you prepared yourself. Prepare a nice, hearty meal from scratch and take it to a local group home for orphans. The children there would love to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal that’s prepared with all the love, care and affection that they deserve.

Sponsor orphaned children or get involved in their needs

It is not necessary to legally adopt a child to support their daily needs and education. Those who want to support numerous orphans can sponsor them by paying for their education and other day-to-day expenses. On a smaller scale, you could motivate a local knitting group or senior home to knit squares and make blankets for a home in your area.
