eThekwini Municipality prepares for festive season

The City of Durban says Durban is the best place to be during the festive season.

THE mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Mxolisi Kaunda, says the City of eThekwini is ready for the holidays.

Kaunda said this during a media conference at Blue Lagoon where he was re-opening the Blue Lagoon pool that was closed in December last year due to sand blocking the drainage system.

As well as this pool re-opening, the City now has 34 beaches in operation, which are ready for the holiday season. Kaunda also said, “We have started the recruitment process of seasonal workers. We will employ childminders, lifeguards and waste pickers.”

The City says that after hosting major events during the last two weeks, they are positive Durban is still a preferred venue for events and that the successful procession of those events is a clear sign of the number of holidaymakers who will be flocking into the province.

He also stated that the municipality was in the process of getting Blue Flag status for their beaches after WESSA announced that none of Durban’s beaches received Blue Flag status because they did not apply for accreditation.

The mayor says they are now testing water quality twice a week to make sure the water quality is up to standard and that if they pick something up, they will be able to fix it just in time for the holidays.
