Win tickets to Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics

The aerobatics spectacle is set to take place at Virginia Airport.

DURBANITES are in for an aerial spectacle this June at the Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics as pilots take to the skies around Virginia Airport.

Spectators can look forward to the thrilling sounds and aerobatics of world-class pilots as they execute their maneuvers with speed and precision.

The event features a star-studded line-up of local and international aerobatic pilots with eight of the world’s top pilots performing a series of breathtaking maneuvers.

Mount Edgecombe resident and organiser, Roger Deare, said the spectacle is about bringing aerobatics to a new audience.

“For the fans and those new to aerobatics, it’s going to be a fantastic spectacle. Virginia Airport will be the central arena from which the spectators will have a prime view of the competition. Pilots will perform maneuvers using 25-meter pylons as markers. These pylons will be placed strategically on Virginia Beach on raised scaffolding, and the pilots’ technical maneuvers will be analysed by a panel of Sport Aerobatic Club of South Africa judges,” he said.

Deare added that the focus of the event is about aviation and aerobatics.

“This event is internationally recognised by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) in affiliation with the Sport Aerobatic Club of South Africa. We have a number of Red Bull and international pilots competing in the event. The competition format will follow a known programme – pilots are issued in advance and practise the sequence beforehand; an unknown programme – pilots are issued the night before and have no prior experience, and a freestyle programme – pilots fly their own sequence – all against the clock.

“There will be a few road closures in and around the airport, so the best thing to do would be to Uber down to the venue. During the break, we will also have some skydivers performing. There will also be a display from Netcare 911, so there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy. There will also be a few model airplanes on sale, and the announcer for the event is Mike Galloway. He’s an internationally recognised announcer,” he said.

Local resident and organiser Roger Deare said Durbanites are in for a treat at the event.
