Roads open as SAPS address taxi protest

Roads are re-opening after police intervention.

MOTORISTS were advised to avoid the intersection of Sandile Thusi and Umgeni roads as a taxi protest caused congestion in the area.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Durban Central SAPS spokesperson, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said roads were re-opened at about 10:40.

“The Police mediated with ( a local taxi association). Taxi drivers have started to co-operate. The road is now opened,” said Maphumulo.

According to Maphumulo, the protest was on going at about 10:00.  Maphumulo said the protest was sparked by a dispute involving permits.

“Apparently, protestors are complaining about permits. Their permits are delayed from the Department of Transport. At the same time, they are being penalised for not having permits,” explained Maphumulo.

He added that the police are on the scene monitoring the situation.

“Our members, together with Metro Police are on the scene. The situation is not out of control,” he said.

Maphumulo, said representatives from the Department of Transport are expected to meet with the taxi association on Wednesday. The Department of Transport was not available for comment at the time this article was published.
