Commemorated on Monday, July 18, this year, many local organisations took time out of their day to give back on Mandela Day.

Durban Central SAPS helps the homeless and the disabled communities on Mandela Day

The Durban Central South African Police Service (SAPS) visited two places to commemorate Nelson Mandela Day on Monday, July 18. The Durban Central SAPS, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, and Employee Health and Wellness, visited The Natal Deaf and Blind Society at Albert Park in Durban Central.

There were crime awareness talks discussing gender-based violence and talks regarding health matters. According to the spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo, the police also opened up a session to hear about the current concerns of the disabled, deaf and blind communities.

“The blind and disabled feel that they are not treated as equal compared to non-disabled persons. One concern is the crime issue which also affects them. Secondly, the taxi minibuses park everywhere and interfere with their area of movement,” said Maphumulo.

Lunch was provided by the SAPS to members of The Natal Deaf and Blind Society.

The SAPS made their second visit to the tents at the Durban Jewish Club, where approximately 100 homeless people, who reside at the tents of the Durban Jewish Club, were given food.
