YOUNG PEOPLE and children from the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre enjoyed a jumping castle, music and dancing at a Youth Day celebration at Bulwer Park on Saturday, June 18. The fun day was organised by Bulwer Safety & Urban Regeneration Forum (BSURF) who hosted the youngsters along with members of the community.
Durban Child and Youth Care Centre director, Mandy Goble, said all 70 children from the home attended the event. The centre is home to children and youth aged between two and 18 years old.
“The children loved it. After the past two years of restrictions, they loved having the opportunity to be out in the community, mingling with people. We do use the park quite often, so they are familiar with the park, but they enjoyed the opportunity to be part of the community. The range of entertainment was really enjoyed. The children joined in with the dances, and one of the choreographers said he would make contact with us to set up lessons with our children after spotting their talent,” said Goble.
Heather Roos, chairperson of Bulwer Safety & Urban Regeneration Forum, thanked National Security and the WDYW Food Court for joining, planning and setting up the Youth Day celebration as well as the performers and DJ who kept all entertained throughout the day. Roos also thanked the Umbilo SAPS, highlighting Sgt Belinda Grobbler, who shared an informative safety-awareness talk for the youth, and the BSURF team members that worked to plan the day.
“Last but most certainly not least, thanks to our youth that attended today. This day was to celebrate the youth in our community, and it was such a joy to see such a good turn-out with everyone joining in all the dancing and singing,” said Roos.
