Monday Motivation: Clean house, clean mind

Nothing sets a week up for success like a clutter-free space.

Welcome to Monday Motivation – where we offer tips and tricks to turn Blue Monday into a successful start to the week. This week, we talk about cleaning tips to start the week with a clean house and a clean mind – using natural DIY cleaning products and easy tricks to tidy up in record time.

DECLUTTERING and cleaning your home can do wonders for your mind. With all the mess cleared up, the mind is better able to focus on daily tasks without too many distractions. What’s more, you’ll feel more relaxed and revitalized by the fresh living space you create.

Here are some cost-effective, DIY ideas to try:

  1. The junk box
A fabric box or basket works well for this trick.

Create a box for each person in the house and set it up in a convenient place. If items are left around the house, creating clutter, deposit them in the box for the person to pack away. This will help to keep clutter at bay and prevent items ‘getting lost’, as well.

2. Clean without chemicals

Bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar are used to create cleaning solutions.

Once clutter is kept in check, it will be a lot easier to do a quick clean. Not only are these homemade cleaners cost effective, they reduce the amount of chemicals washed down the drain which can benefit the environment, as well.

-Window cleaner

Make a quick and easy window cleaner by combining equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the window and wipe away with a soft cloth. For dirtier windows, add a drop of liquid dish soap to the mix.

-Shower cleaner

Combine 2tbs white vinegar with 2tbs bicarb and 400-500ml of water – allow the bicarb to dissolve fully before transferring to a spray bottle. Spray over the shower and scrub away. This makes a good shower cleaner to wash away any residue or grime build-up.

-Carpet cleaner

Mix 2tbs salt with 250ml white vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the stained area and allow to dry. Sweep up the dry mixture to see the results. Another method is to lightly spray the stain with white vinegar and then sprinkle bicarb over to cover the affected area. Allow the vinegar to dry completely, and sweep or vacuum up the mixture.

3. Spruce up your space

A pot plant can liven jup any space.

With a decluttered, freshly cleaned home, why not add a plant to the coffee table or hang a picture you like? Add an accent or two that spark joy. Creating a visually pleasing space to live in can be more motivating than you think. It’s time to conquer this week with a clean house and a clean mind!
