SAPS nab three for armed robbery in central Durban

The suspects stole cellphone and R1 800 cash before fleeing the scene.

THREE suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court today after police arrested them for armed robbery on Friday, May 20.

According to Captain Muzi Maphumulo, spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, a man was walking along Diakonia Street at 21:30 when a blue VW Polo stopped next to him.

“Three suspects came out the vehicle, carrying handguns, and threatened him,” said Mapumulo. “The suspects took a cellphone and cash of R1 800 from the complainant and fled.”

Durban Central members were patrolling nearby when the complainant flagged them down.

“The Police members intercepted the suspect’s vehicle which was travelling along Joseph Nduli in Durban. Police searched three occupants that were in the vehicle and discovered two unlicensed 9mm firearms and one licenced 9mm firearm. The Police also discovered ammunition belonging to the suspects,” said Maphumulo.

Maphumulo said the suspects are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrates Court today, May 23.

“The complainant positively identified all three suspects as those that robbed him. The Police seized the VW Polo driven by the suspects as it was used during the commission of a robbery,” concluded Mapumulo.
