Glenmore residents fear loose electric cable is a health hazard

Residents in Pitcairn Road are concerned for their safety due to an overhanging electrical wire on the road caused by a car accident in January of this year that resulted in a light pole being damaged and the wire coming loose.

RESIDENTS in Pitcairn Road are concerned for their safety due to an electrical wire that hangs precariously over the road as a result of a collapsed light pole. Pitcairn Road residents say the pole was damaged in a car accident and since then nothing has been done to solve the issue. According to resident Judith Nel, the accident took place earlier this year. “This accident happened on January 11. A driver lost control of their vehicle and collided with another stationary vehicle. We’ve reached out to our local councillor and have had no luck,” said Nel.

She says the overhanging cord is a health hazard and the longer the pole remains askew, the closer the wire gets to the road’s surface. “We try to create a safe environment in Pitcairn because there are a lot of children staying on this road and they play together outside. But it’s no longer safe and the cord has been falling more and more. People have to pass on the opposite side of the road to avoid it. It would just take one tug from a big truck and it’s pulled off and we have a live wire,” said Nel.

The light pole has been askew since the accident four months ago.

The community of children who used to spend their afternoons playing on the Glenmore Road say their parents have prohibited them from playing outside out of fear for their safety.

The children now stay inside their yards and instead visit each other’s homes. Residents have appealed to the Municipality and have attempted to contact local ward councillors for assistance but it has been four months and they have received no help.
