A fusion of music takes UKZN stage

By infusing modern jazz and pop sounds into their music, Abahambayo aims to preserve African folk music.

THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College Campus, will host a performance by musical group, Abahambayo on Wednesday May 4 at 18:00.

This group, which consists of four members, has been performing around KwaZulu-Natal for three years. They aim to preserve African folk music by infusing modern jazz and pop sounds into the mix to appeal to a wider audience.

Co-founder of Abahambayo, Nhlanhla Zondi and Frankie Buthelezi are accomplished performers. Zondi won the best Zabalaza production award in 2017 while Buthelezi, who is known for her sweet vocals, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree.

The third member, Barry Clausen has played with the likes of Robbie Jansen, Mac MacKenzie, and Basil Mannenberg Coetzee. He is a bass player for Abahambayo. Percussionist, Oudskül, merges traditional and modern beats.

Doors open at 17:30 for the 18:00 show. Tickets are R100, with a discounted price of R70 for pensioners and R40 for students. Booking is essential. Email: zamat1@ukzn.ac.za.
