Earth Day is commemorated annually on April 22 to raise awareness about environmental protection. First held in 1970, Earth Day is now commemorated across the globe. This year’s theme is : Invest In Our Planet. In honour of the special day, Berea Mail visited local charity shops to learn more about buying second hand. One of the best ways to reduce carbon footprint is to reuse, reduce and recycle and thrift shopping seems to cover all the bases. Here are a few local stores to visit in Berea:
Bring and Browse, 9 Bulwer Road
Brenda Jarvis, who owns this charming charity shop, said funds raised support three homes for the elderly- Mothwa Haven and Natal Settlers Memorial Homes in Umbilo and Ekhanana Old Age Home in Umlazi.
Jarvis who has worked at the store for 16 years, became the owner five years ago.
Not only does the shop benefit the elderly, it offers affordable prices to the local community.
“I call the homes and ask what they need. Then I buy items using funds from the store. Everything is donated to us, so I can sell it at a very reasonable price, which also helps the community,” said Jarvis.
On top of these benefits, thrifting is great for the environment.
Trading hours: The store is open Monday- Friday from 08.30- 16:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00-12:00. What you’ll find: books, clothes, jewellery, homeware, toys, shoes, picture frames. Call 094 630 5263.

Charity Hop Shop, 121 Helen Joseph Road
This Glenwood shop is a must-see for all thrifters. Manager, Thokozani ‘T-man’ Mabaso said funds raised form sales at Charity Hop Shop support Holah House, a home for children. With several rooms fill to the brim, shoppers can find just about anything at the shop for a steal.
“Prices depend on the quality of the items. You might find a tennis racquet for R10. If a racquet comes in that’s in a better condition, the price will go up. Our prices start from R1,” he said.
“Its like a treasure hunt, you don’t know what you will find,” added Louise Smith, who volunteers at the store from time to time.
Trading hours: The store is open 08:00- 16:00. What you’ll find: sports equipment, furniture, clothes, records, CDs, DVDs, homeware, toys, cards, shoes, plants. Call 083 232 5501.
