Fishing club invites disabled to ‘fin-tastic’ day out

While the event is free of charge, registration is essential for all attendees.

LOCAL fishing club, Ramcatfishing is hoping to ‘reel in’ a few more people with disabilities as they host their annual fishing day at Durban Naval Base on Saturday, April 23.

The fun day of fishing will start at 08:00 and keep attendees busy until 16:00. The club can host up to 60 people at the event which is free of charge.

“Any adult or child in a wheelchair is welcome along with any amputees,” said Yster Smal of Ramcatfishing.

Ramcatfishing club will be serving coffee, sandwiches and boerewors rolls to keep hunger at bay as the fishing commences and there will be breyani and cooldrinks served at lunch time. The event aims to offer those with disabilities a chance to enjoy some fresh air.

“The biggest benefit for them is to get out of their room. Those with disabilities were isolated during Covid-19 lockdown because they were at high risk. We take them out into the sunshine and try to put a smile on their face,” said Smal.

Ramcatfishin has been hosting the event for 15 years.

“We are a circle of friends that take care of our friends with disabilities. We were conscripted soldiers and some of our friends were injured in the line of duty. They landed up in wheelchairs and every time we went to visited we would ask what they needed. The biggest need was to get out of their rooms. If you take them out to a shopping centre they go home more depressed because they are the only one in the crowd who can’t walk. After the fishing event we talk to them and they always say then they didn’t know so many people care for them,” said Smal.

While the event is free of charge, attendees must register before hand. To register, call Smal on 081 754 8144 or email: ystersmal@gmail.com.
