Vehicles have been plundered, roads destroyed as a result of the KZN floods

The floods, which began earlier this week, are still causing devastation, with provincial authorities estimating that up to 253 lives have been lost.

According to the Road Freight Association (RFA), businesses are dealing with port closures, congestion, and vehicle looting as a result of this week’s flooding in KwaZulu-Natal.

Transnet said on Tuesday that its Durban port operations will be halted until further notice as a precaution while its team of engineers monitored the situation.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate had notified the RFA that vehicles were being targeted for looting because of the congestion caused by the flooding in the Marianhill region, according to RFA CEO Gavin Kelly.

Flooding has damaged access roads around the Port of Durban, as well as neighboring lorries, according to Kelly.

“Operations in logistics will be harmed. There will be delays in the delivery of imported items. Members of the organization have been encouraged to postpone any trips for Durban and to seek out depots and safe parking locations along the way,” Kelly said.

While the flooding has caused roadblocks and damage to trucks and containers, Kelly said there will be no shortages of fuel or food as a direct result of the storm.
