City opens community halls for residents affected by floods

Community halls have been opened to assist those who need shelter.

AS the rainy weather continues thoughout the City today, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged residents to remain vigilant.

“We want to caution residents to not speed and keep a safe following distance while driving on wet roads. Obey the rules of the road to avoid accidents,” he said.

“Use fire responsibly as the City is prone to fire disasters, particularly in informal settlements during such inclement weather,” he added.

Yesterday’s downpour resulted in two fatalities – one from KwaMashu’s ward 47 and the other in uMlazi’s ward 87.

Kaunda has conveyed his condolences to the grieving families.

In the mean time the City has opened community halls to accommodate residents impacted by the floods.

The halls which are currently opened are:

  • Clermont Hall
  • New Germany Hall
  • Waterloo Hall
  • OThongathi Hall
  • Amawoti Hall
  • Marrianridge Hall
  • Hambanathi Hall
  • V Moonsamy Hall
  • Belvedere Hall

The list will be updated as more venues become available.
