Two Gauteng teens drown at Durban beach

Tributes poured in on social media as community members mourned the loss of the two teenagers.

SAPS Search and Rescue divers recovered the bodies of two teenage boys at Durban beaches on March 28.  In a statement, SAPS said inquest dockets were opened after the boys drowned off the Durban coast.

“Divers recovered the bodies of two male drowning victims, aged 17 and 18, at Laguna Beach and Country Club Beach respectively. The boys attended a rugby tournament in KZN,” said SAPS.

In a statement, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the learners were in Grade 10 and Grade 12 at Hoërskool Birchleigh and Tembisa High School.  

“According to information at our disposal, the schools were in Durban from March 24, where learners were participating in a rugby tournament. They were scheduled to return on March 31. On Sunday morning, the learners and several educators went swimming at a Durban North beach, where some learners were reportedly assisted to shore by lifeguards after experiencing challenges,” said Lesufi.

On the shore, educators realised two learners were missing and started searching for the boys.

“The search went on until the evening with no success, after which the educators opened a missing person cases at Durban Central Police Station,” said Lesufi.

On Monday, March 28, the educators were informed that the bodies were discovered on Durban beaches, about 2km north of where they were swimming on Sunday.

Tributes poured in on Facebook as the community mourned the loss of the two learners.

“Heaven gained two more angels way to soon,” wrote Rita Davidsonread who shared a tribute on Facebook page, Hoerskool Birchleigh – Muur van Herinnering/ Wall of memories.

Davidson identified the learners as Kamsi Ezeugo and Malatswa Kgasago. More than 100 social media users reacted to the post and more than 45 comments poured in, with many sharing tributes and condolences.
