Delivery driver sought for recycling project

Recyclable tins, cardboard and plastic generate an income for MOTH cottage residents and the project is so close to sucess.

PENSIONERS, Louisa Hitchcock and Shay Lester are looking for a good Samaritan to collect recycling from MOTH Cottages and drop it off at a local depo once in a while on their behalf.

MOTH cottage residents collect their recyclable cans, tins, cardboard and plastic which Hitchcock and Lester sort for delivery to generate revenue for the upkeep of the cottages.

“We collect a substantial amount of recycling in a short space of time, but sadly we do not have a vehicle to deliver all this to a recycling depo on Sydney Road. We do have a minibus here, but it’s been out of commission for some months, needing extensive repairs. I don’t even know if we could fit our recycling in the bus, so we are really looking for someone with a bakkie to help. It may come up every second month or so,” said Hitchcock.

As the recycling project serves as a fundraiser, the residents can’t afford to pay for a delivery service.

“We are prepared to pay a kilometre rate for petrol, although, 57% of the residents here are SASSA pensioners. If you know what a SASSA pension is, you know it’s a battle to survive. We are singularly blessed in that some of the MOTH shellholes provide meals, but it really doesn’t go far. We get paid for the recycling we collect and there are differing rates for different products. That’s why we sort the recycling here – so we get the best possible rate,” explained Hitchcock.

She and Lester have fine tuned the process, which now takes about an hour per week.
“The first time we sorted the recycling it took us three hours, because we hadn’t done it before,” said Lester.

The pair took on the project to uplift their community.

“We are civic-minded people who want to help the community we live in,” said Hitchcock.
